Why Some Just Made Scents Products Are Only Available at Tradeshows
If you’ve ever come to one of my markets and said, “I didn’t see this one on your website!” — you’re not alone.
Some products at Just Made Scents are intentionally sold only at in-person events, and there’s a good reason for that.
Actually, several reasons, including making sure the right products are matched with the right experience. Let me explain.
1. Some products simply perform better when customers can see, touch, and smell them
A few of my specialty items are highly sensory — their value shows up when you hold them in your hands, feel the texture, compare the scents, or see the real-life color and finish.
Online photos can’t capture the sparkle some of our products contain nor can the exact scent profile of a complex fragrance be determined.
These are the kinds of products where you really need the in-person moment for it to make sense. Markets allow that.
2. Some items are limited-run — too small to list, but too special not to share
Every now and then, I create something in tiny batches:
A unique fragrance I’m testing
A reimagined version of a customer favorite
A special mold or design I only poured a handful of
A pet item or body-care item not meant for mass availability
These aren’t large enough to justify full photography, listing time, SEO setup, labeling templates, and inventory management on the site. But they are special enough to bring to the people who show up in person.
It’s my way of offering something exclusive — a little treasure for the folks who support local markets and choose handmade.
3. Some products aren’t practical to ship
A few items just don’t travel well:
Delicate embeds
Specialty wax blends
Highly scented items that need proper protection from high temperatures of transportation vehicles.
At a tradeshow, I can hand it to you knowing it’s exactly as intended — no melting, no cracking, no crushed packaging, no shipping drama and answer any questions you may have.
4. In-person exclusives make markets fun and worth attending
Part of the magic of tradeshows and local markets is discovery.
People love walking up to the Just Made Scents booth and finding something they’ve never seen online.
Offering exclusive items:
Creates excitement
Rewards loyal repeat customers
Encourages people to shop local
Builds genuine relationships
Keeps creativity alive on my end
There’s a sense of tradition in this — makers have always offered special items at fairs, festivals, and markets. It’s part of the craft.
5. Some products are stepping stones — testing before launching online
Markets are where I learn what people truly love.
If something sells out fast, I know it’s worth scaling and listing online.
If it doesn’t resonate, I’ve saved time, resources, and website clutter.
Testing in person lets me:
Adjust fragrance strength/ Refine packaging
Improve the formula/Decide if something belongs in the permanent line
Customers at markets help shape the future of Just Made Scents — often without even realizing it.
Final Thought
I love offering online shopping because it makes Just Made Scents accessible to anyone, anywhere. But tradeshows hold a different kind of charm — they allow me to share specialty items that would lose their magic, freshness, or practicality if pushed into mass online listings.
So if you ever see something at a show that isn’t on the website… just know:
It’s not a mistake — it’s intentional, thoughtful, and made with the same care that goes into everything I create.
And if you really want one of those special pieces?
Just ask. If the batch allows it, I’ll always try to make room for you.
Why Cheaper Doesn’t Mean Better: The Truth About Quality in Handcrafted Goods
Every so often, someone looks at a handmade soap, candle, lotion, or pet product and asks the same question:
“Why is this more expensive than the one at the store?”
It’s a fair question. We live in a world where everything is pushed toward cheaper, faster, mass-produced. But here’s the real, honest truth:
Every time a product gets cheaper, something is taken out of it.
And once you take enough out, you’re not buying the same product anymore — you’re buying a hollow version of what it used to be.
When Quality Breaks Down, the Product Breaks Down
A good product starts with good ingredients.
Period.
When a manufacturer needs to cut costs, they don’t magically trim “nothing.” They trim:
The quality of the oils
The purity of the wax
The strength and safety of the fragrance
The richness of the butters
The thickness of the preservative system
The integrity of the packaging
Piece by piece, the product gets watered down — literally and figuratively. And every time something is removed, the original experience is weakened.
You can’t expect luxury results from bargain-bin ingredients. That’s not how quality works, and it never has.
Why Handmade Products Cost More — and Why They Should
When you buy from a small maker like Just Made Scents, you’re not buying the absolute cheapest ingredients money can buy.
You’re buying:
Oils chosen for skin benefits
Wax tested for clean burns
Fragrances that are safe, phthalate-free, and compliant
Recipes created with intention, safety, and experience
Products made in small batches, not pumped out by a machine
And you’re buying something even bigger:
Integrity.
A small business doesn’t get to cut corners. We don’t get to change formulas quietly to save a few pennies.
When I put something on my shelf — whether it’s soap, candles, pet products, or something new — it has to work. It has to feel good. It has to reflect the heart and reputation behind my brand.
That’s the promise you’re buying.
A Cheaper Version Is Not the Same Product
If you remove the high-quality oils from a soap, you no longer have a nourishing bar — you have a detergent brick.
If you remove the rich butters from a lotion, you no longer have a moisturizing cream — you have scented water.
If you remove the premium wax from a candle, you no longer have a smooth, clean burn — you have soot, tunneling, and wasted fragrance.
Cheaper is not “the same thing but less expensive.”
Cheaper is less of everything that made it good to begin with.
And once you break a product down far enough, you can’t put the quality back in.
What You’re Really Paying For
When someone chooses Just Made Scents, they’re choosing:
Products made with intention instead of shortcuts
Materials chosen for safety, performance, and skin-feel
Testing, adjusting, and improving — not mass production
The assurance that what you’re buying today isn’t a stripped-down version of last year’s formula
A maker who stands behind every single item, because my name is attached to it
Good craftsmanship has always mattered.
And in a world drifting toward “fast and cheap,” choosing quality is a way of saying:
“I deserve better… and the people I love do too.”
Closing Thought
Cheaper might look tempting in the moment — but quality lasts, performs, and honors the person using it.
At Just Made Scents, I’ll always choose the path that protects the integrity of the product, even when that means higher costs, harder work, or slower production. Because once you break down a product and dilute its soul… it’s no longer worth making.
And you deserve better than that.
Why Small Batching Matters: The Heart of Quality at Just Made Scents
There’s something special about small-batch products — something you simply can’t replicate with machines, assembly lines, or massive factory runs.
Small batching is not just a “method.” It’s a mindset. It’s a promise.
And it’s one of the reasons Just Made Scents is able to deliver products that feel different, perform better, and maintain their integrity from the first jar to the last.
Let’s talk about why small batching matters — and why you should care.
1. Small Batches Protect Quality and Freshness
When you’re making thousands of units at once, you can’t give each one individual attention. Ingredients sit longer. Fragrances fade. Oils oxidize. Mistakes get buried instead of corrected.
But in small batches?
Every ingredient is measured with intention
Every batch is poured fresh
Every product is checked with a human eye, not a conveyor belt
Every recipe stays true to the original formula
You get a product that hasn’t sat in a warehouse for six months. You get freshness. You get consistency. You get the quality the recipe was meant to have.
2. Small Batching Allows Real Control — Instead of Shortcut Manufacturing
Big companies rely on fillers, stabilizers, thickeners, and synthetic boosters to make mass production easier. Cheaper ingredients flow faster and stretch farther. That’s how you get products that feel “off,” don’t last, or smell different every time you buy them.
When you craft in small batches, you don’t need all those shortcuts.
You can:
Control temperature with precision
Adjust for humidity, weather, and seasonal ingredient shifts
Ensure fragrances bind properly
Pour at the right moment, not the convenient one
This level of control is one of the biggest reasons handmade products outperform store-bought ones.
3. Small Batches Reduce Waste — and Increase Accountability
When a giant company creates a batch that fails, they dump it or quietly reformulate.
When a small maker creates a batch, we’re accountable to every single item in it.
Small batching means:
Less waste
More responsible sourcing
Better cost management
Higher attention to detail
No hidden “oops, let’s water this down to cover the mistake”
If something doesn’t meet my standards, it doesn’t go on the shelf. There’s no sweeping anything under a rug of mass volume.
4. Small Batching Protects the Customer Experience
When someone buys from Just Made Scents, I want them to feel a difference immediately — in the texture, the scent, the performance, the experience.
Small batching ensures that:
Each product performs like the one before
Each fragrance is true to its intended strength
Each soap cures properly
Each lotion or cream is blended to the right consistency
Each candle burns clean and evenly
Quality isn’t a coincidence.
It’s a direct result of staying small enough to care.
5. Small Batching Honors the Tradition of Craftsmanship
This part matters to me in a personal way.
Before everything became automated… before everything needed to be produced faster and cheaper… craftsmanship meant hands on, thoughtful, intentional work.
Small batching keeps that tradition alive.
It connects the maker to the product.
It connects the product to the customer.
And it keeps the integrity of the craft intact.
There’s nothing old-fashioned about doing things right.
In fact, it’s one of the most forward-thinking decisions a small business can make.
Final Thought
At Just Made Scents, small batching isn’t just the way I work — it’s the reason the products feel the way they do. It protects quality, preserves consistency, and keeps the spirit of true craftsmanship alive.
Could I make more by scaling up? Of course.
But I’d lose the very thing that makes these products worth making.
And you deserve the version made with intention — not the version made by the thousands.
Why I Stopped Using Store-Bought Sunscreen on My Grandkids
All summer long, my grandkids have used this lotion while swimming, hiking, and playing in the Georgia heat. Not one sunburn. That speaks louder than any label.
This Isn’t About Fear
I’m not here to scare you. I’m here to inform you. You deserve to know what you’re putting on your skin and your children’s skin. Even if you never buy a thing from me, I hope this helps you feel more confident about your choices.
Always read the ingredients. Trust your instincts. And know that you don’t have to settle for less.
For years, I did what most people do. I grabbed the familiar bottles off the shelf, the ones with bright colors and promises like "gentle protection," "baby-safe," or "dermatologist recommended." I thought I was doing the right thing. But then I started reading the back of the label—and I didn't like what I saw.
What I Found in Conventional Sunscreens
These are real ingredients listed on products marketed for babies and children:
Avobenzone – A chemical UVA filter known to break down in sunlight unless stabilized. Studies have raised concerns about its safety and absorption into the bloodstream.
Homosalate – A UVB absorber that's been flagged for potential hormone disruption.
Octocrylene – Can degrade into benzophenone, a compound linked to cancer.
Octisalate – A stabilizer and UVB filter. Less problematic, but often used alongside harsher filters.
Alcohol Denat (SD-40) – A drying alcohol that can irritate delicate or damaged skin.
Fragrance – A blanket term that can include dozens of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are allergens or hormone disruptors.
These ingredients might be legal, but that doesn’t mean they’re what I want on my grandbabies' skin.
So I began doing my research and I Made My Own
I decided to take matters into my own hands. I spent time learning, testing, and tweaking until I created a mineral-based lotion made with ingredients I trust.
Here’s what you’ll find in the lotion I use on my family:
Non-Nano Zinc Oxide – A natural mineral that sits on top of the skin to reflect UVA and UVB rays.
Avocado Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil, and Shea Butter – Moisturizing, gentle, and full of skin-loving nutrients.
Red Raspberry Seed Oil and Carrot Seed Oil – Antioxidant-rich and often praised for their support in sun-exposed skincare.
Vitamin E Oil – Helps extend shelf life and nourish the skin.
Optiphen – A preservative that keeps water-based products safe without parabens or formaldehyde.
Does It Work?

💋 Kiss-Ready Lips: Why a Little Lip Care Goes a Long Way
Let’s be real — we put a lot of thought into taking care of our skin, hair, and nails. But our lips? They’re easy to forget about... until they’re dry, cracked, and begging for help.
Here’s the truth: your lips deserve love every single day. Not just when they’re chapped, but especially when they’re not. And no, we’re not just talking about looking cute (though soft, kiss-ready lips are definitely a bonus).
💕 Keep Your Lips Kiss-Ready (Even If You're Just Kissing Coffee Cups)
Lip care isn’t just about beauty — it’s about feeling confident, cared for, and ready for whatever (or whoever) comes your way. Whether it’s a good morning kiss, a Zoom meeting, or a quiet moment to yourself, healthy lips help you show up fully.
And if someone does get close enough for a kiss? Well… soft, sweet lips don’t hurt, right?
Pro tip: Stash one balm in your bag, one by the bed, one in the car, and one wherever your lips usually feel forgotten. Consistency is key.
💄 What to Look for in a Good Lip Balm
Not all balms are created equal. Look for these skin-loving ingredients:
Beeswax – locks in moisture and adds a protective barrier
Sunflower Oil – deeply nourishing and lightweight
Shea Butter – helps repair and soften dry skin
Flavor oils or essential oils – just enough to make it a joy to use
Our handmade lip balms are poured in small batches with all of the above — because your lips deserve more than wax and filler. They deserve care.
😘 For the Moments That Matter
Whether you're sipping coffee, heading out the door, or leaning in for that spontaneous kiss — soft lips just make everything better.
Keep your kiss memorable with lips that linger.
Smooth, well-loved lips say a lot without saying a word — and they leave a lasting impression, too.
So here’s your gentle reminder: keep your lips kiss-ready. Not just for someone else — for you. For the feeling of confidence that comes from knowing you're taking care of yourself in the little ways.
🍉 Meet Some New Flavors Your Lips Will Love
We created these four fruity, tropical flavors to keep your lips happy and hydrated all season long:
🍍 Pineapple Pop – Juicy, tropical, and bright
🍉 Watermelon Sugar – Sweet, flirty, and summer-ready
🥥 Coconut Kiss – Soft as a breeze. Sweet as a kiss.
These balms glide on smooth, feel amazing, and won’t leave your lips sticky or waxy — just soft, silky, and ready for anything.
✨ A Little Luxury, Every Day
Lip care isn’t just about beauty — it’s about comfort, confidence, and those little acts of care that make a difference. Whether you're prepping for a kiss, greeting the day, or just giving yourself a second of softness... your lips deserve it.
Stay hydrated. Stay smooth. Stay kiss-ready. 💋
Kisses,
Angie

🧸The Cream I Had to Make: Because His Tears Were Mine Too
Some products I plan.
Others… I just have to make.
My grandson had one of the worst cases of diaper rash I’ve ever seen. Red, raw, uncomfortable—and worst of all, it was breaking his heart and mine right along with it. As a maker and a grandma, I couldn’t just sit by and wait for it to “clear up.” I needed to do something. Something gentle. Something real.
So I did what I always do when someone I love is hurting—I went to my workspace, pulled out my ingredients, and started creating with care.
The main ingredient? Coconut oil.
It’s known for being soothing and rich, and I’ve trusted it for years in my soaps and salves. It's not fancy. It's not new. But it’s good. And when you’re trying to bring comfort to someone that small and precious, that’s what matters.
Everything in this cream was chosen with intention—safe, gentle, and made to feel better the moment it touches the skin. No burning. No guessing. Just comfort.
Now, every time I open a jar, I remember why I made it.
For him.
For his smile.
For the days when love looks like mixing oils and whispering, “It’s okay, baby, grandma’s got you.”
If you’ve got a little one who’s hurting, and you want something made by someone who gets it—this might be the jar that helps.
Because some things you make with a formula. and some things you make with your whole heart.
Happy diapering,
Angie
🌿Don’t Be Rash: Made with Love (and a Little Sass)
Some of the things I make come from grief. Others come from memory.
This one? This one came from watching my grandkids come in from playing outside, scratching like crazy and looking miserable.
Every summer, it’s the same story—red, irritated skin from something they brushed up against while doing what kids do best: running wild and free. I wanted to give them something made with care—gentle, thoughtful, and cooling. Something that felt good on their skin and gave them a little comfort without the harsh stuff.
One day, after watching them scratch and squirm for the third time that week, I decided to do what I do best—head to the soap room and start mixing.
That’s how Don’t Be Rash was born.
A cold process soap with a crisp, clean scent—tea tree and peppermint to wake things up—and a blend of calamine, clay, oats, and butters that just feels good when your skin’s had a day.
Now?
They ask for it by name.
Whenever that familiar itch creeps in, they say, “Where’s that soap you made?”
It’s not a treatment. It’s not medicine.
It’s just made for the moments when skin feels off and a little extra care goes a long way.
And let’s be honest… sometimes it’s not just the kids who need it.
This bar’s for anyone who knows the outdoors are great—until they’re not.
Because comfort doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes it starts with a good bar of soap—and someone who made it for you.
Because the ones we love are strong motivators,
Angie
🔥🪽Judy’s Light: For the ones we still carry, even when they’re gone.
I didn’t set out to make a memorial candle. I wasn’t trying to create something poetic or marketable that day—I just missed my best friend.
Judy and I were best friends for over 52 years. That’s not just a chapter—that’s a whole book. A lifetime of inside jokes, hard conversations, quiet support, and love that didn’t need explaining. When she passed, the silence e left behind was deafening.
One day, in the middle of missing her, I poured a candle. I didn’t think. I didn’t plan. I just needed to make something—something real. And without even meaning to, I labeled it: Judy’s Light.
It was my way of saying,
“You’re still here. I still see you.”
This candle isn’t just wax and scent. It’s memory.
It’s grief in a softer form.
It’s love that lingers.
And if you’ve ever loved someone so long they became part of your foundation—and then lost them—you know exactly what this candle means.
May her light show you the way when you are lost on your path.
May her flame burn bright for those who journey with you.
— Judy’s Light label
If this candle finds its way into your hands, I hope it brings you comfort. Or clarity. Or just a moment of stillness.
Because sometimes, a flame is all we have left—and all we need to keep going.
If you carry the memory of someone whose light still lingers, I can help you honor them.
A custom label, just for your loved one.
A scent that speaks their name without a word.
Together, we’ll create something that helps their light shine on.
From my heart to yours,
Angie
Why I Create the Way I Do
Some things are easier to say with scent than with words.
I didn’t start this business because I had it all figured out. I started it because my hands needed something to do when my heart was too heavy. Every candle I pour and every bar of soap I make comes from that place—a place of grief, memory, and healing.
This blog, Behind the Scents, is where I share the stories behind what I create. Not just how I make something, but why I made it in the first place.
Because scent carries memory.
Lavender smells like calm and care.
Orange sherbet brings back sticky fingers and barefoot summers.
And sometimes, a quiet candle says “I miss you” louder than words ever could.
I make handmade soaps and candles that are meant to comfort, to ground, to remind you that you’re not alone. Whether you’re buying for yourself or someone who needs a little gentleness, I hope you feel that intention in every detail.
Handmade should mean more than handcrafted.
It should mean heart-led.
Thanks for being here—for reading, for supporting, and for letting what I make become part of your story too.
Angie
Healing in small batches.
🕯️ Why I Started Just Made Scents
Posted in Behind the Scents | By Angie Nichols
“Take time for you. You’re worth it. Indulge, even if it’s just a little.
May your life burn as bright as a flame.
May your flame ignite a light in others.”
— Angie Nichols, Owner of Just Made Scents
Some stories begin with joy. Mine began with grief.
When I lost my mother to a rare neurological virus, I felt untethered. The world kept spinning, but I stood still—flooded with silence, questions, and a pain I didn’t know how to carry. In that quiet, I found myself reaching for something—anything—to bring a sense of comfort.
I began to create.
At first, it was small. A candle here. A batch of soap there. My hands found a rhythm before my heart found peace. But little by little, I realized what I was making wasn't just for me—it was for others too. For anyone going through something heavy. For anyone needing a reminder to breathe, pause, and feel held.
That’s how Just Made Scents was born.
Every scent I blend, every balm I pour, every bar of soap I cure is crafted with intention. To offer comfort. To spark warmth. To remind you of your own light.
This brand isn’t just about products. It’s about gentleness—for others, and for yourself. It’s about taking time to slow down, smell something beautiful, and remember that healing can happen in small batches, too.
Thank you for being here. For reading this. For supporting handmade healing.
You deserve care. And I’m honored to make something that might hold a little piece of that for you.
With love,
– Angie
